Resume Tips
A resume is a
marketing tool through which you should promote your skills with an
expectation of getting an interview, not a job.
Your resume
should communicate to the employer that you have the necessary skills for
the job and can effectively utilize these skills to achieve.
There is no
single 'good' or 'winning' format. It is always the content and
clarity that are important.
The following
is format that we like:
- Objective
- Summary of Skills
- Work Experience
- Achievements
- Education
- Training/Membership/Computer Skills
etc.
- References
In order for your resume to seem
inviting and to grab attention:
- Format of the resume should be simple
and easy to read, without fancy bullets and text.
- Resume should be well written, clear
and concise as this will demonstrate your writing skills.
- Use one type of font throughout the
document. Standard size for text is 11 pt and 12 pt for section headings.
General tips:
- Proofread the resume and cover letter
for grammatical and spelling errors.
- Quantify your achievements and do not
use self flattering terms and/or do not list soft skills such as “Outstanding
team player”
- Use action verbs and avoid using “I”
in your resume.
- Use position titles that match the
job or advertisement number as the e-mail’s subject.
- Do not use general phrases to name
your resume file. A good and professional way to name a file is:
Firstname-lastname-speciality-jobtype-date.doc
JohnDoe-Mechanical-ProjectManager-Jan2006.Doc
- Analyze the job requirements for
keywords and include them in your resume.
- Ex.: if the employer is looking for
experience in Primavera, then list your skill level and experience using
this software. Substantiate any claims in your work experience section.
- Assess your skill set and strengths
and list them briefly at the beginning of the resume under Summary of
Skills. These should address why you are the one who is qualified for the
job.
- Personal information such as hobbies,
interests, age, date of birth, sex, race and religion should not be
included in the resume.
- Do not leave gaps in your employment
history. Rather than leaving a gap, give a brief description of what you
were doing during that time period.
- Education section should be listed in
reverse chronological order and should include the following:
- Name and Location of institution
- Name of degree and year of
completion.
- Work Experience should be listed in
reverse chronological order (i.e. last job first) and should include the
following:
- Name of Organization
- Location of work
- Title of position
- Dates of employment
- Description of Achievements and
responsibilities.
- References should be provided only
when requested.
